Why I manage the Reaper in FFXIV Endwalker

When I arrived in Eorzea, I felt like a stranger. Like many others, I started playing the Final Fantasy XIV free trial during lockdown and have since upgraded to a full membership, partly to play with friends, mostly for a new outfit.

After a year of continuous play, I still feel like a stranger; I missed ten years of changes, adjustments and community stories. Your character is also an alien to the world of FFXIV’s Hydaelyn – a curious soul with a mysterious power that you’ll learn more about through a gigantic main quest line. One of the quickest connections I have made with them is that we are both surrounded by people who have inhabited our respective spaces long before we arrived, and it is this connection that inspires the role play that I love it so much in this MMO. But that will all change when Endwalker comes out.

While its history and accessibility to solo players got me through the door, FFXIV jobs were the biggest hook for me. They really allow you to immerse yourself in every role and aesthetic. Put that down to years of watching Kurosawa movies or a craze for the Demon Slayer anime, but I went for the samurai. Venturing through Eorzea on his own, the Wandering Ronin fits the image of playing FFXIV that I have in my head, although the melee DPS work skill set is particularly accommodating for solo play.

Endwalker is adding two new Jobs – Sage and Reaper – to try out, and while Sage’s buff and debuff skill set promises to be a lot of fun in trained hands, I’ll be a Primary Reaper on the day of the game. exit. I got to try out the new work at a recent Endwalker press event, and it looks a lot like the samurai I play in my day. Both are melee DPS classes that let you cycle through basic attacks to build up enough power for the bigger and bad guys.

As the Reaper, you’ll use Slice, Waxing Slice, and Infernal Slice to build up your Soul Meter, which you can spend on establishing new moves. Weaving these actions into your flurry of attacks then fills your to wrap up gauge, optionally allowing you to cast Enshroud – a powerful spell that fuses you with a spirit and supercharges all of your existing attacks.

There is also a sequence of moves that increase your damage. One of my favorites, Arcane Circle, increases the damage dealt by all members of your party by 3%. It might sound sweet, but it reminds me of a move I miss in the Ninja job – Trick Attack – that increases the damage a single target takes from your party by 5%. Compared to a single target debuff, Reaper’s Arcane Circle allows me to offer my party a little more utility. I like the Samurai’s solo play experience, but I like to help out every now and then.

We’re given plenty of room to roam during our preview session, but I quickly make my way to the new dungeon, Tower of Zot. There’s no point in flexing my new Reaper moves on a training dummy in Thavnair; real growth comes from having your skull collapsed by a dungeon boss.

If FFXIV is like a Final Fantasy theme park, then Endwalker’s new dungeon is a new and exciting roller coaster. The four-player mission – roughly equivalent to a Destiny 2 strike, rather than a raid – is based on a Final Fantasy IV location and consists of narrow, labyrinthine hallways, all filled with monsters you will need to take out. between boss encounters. with the Magus Sisters. The tower offers a good challenge without ever really threatening to frustrate my group. As you clear each floor, you will face off against one of the Three Sisters, which will give you a chance to learn how they fight and what AoE spells and attacks need to be watched for. This builds up perfectly until the final encounter where, of course, you’ll take on all three simultaneously. It’s a tense and chaotic battle that tests your memory of each sister’s fighting style.

Preparation for the Tower of Zot in FFXIV Endwalker

While the new dungeon gives me a great opportunity to master the Reaper and fine tune my spins, it also shows me how the recently revealed stat crunch works. In a recent FFXIV live letter, director Naoki Yoshida revealed that the difference in gear attributes from levels 50 to 80 will be reduced along with the overall HP and damage values. Before the start of our play session, we see another presentation from Yoshida where he points out that the squeeze in stats shouldn’t change the feel of the game, but rather set it up for the next ten years, so that the numbers of enemies in 2031 do not. t occupies half of the screen.

After I finish my run with the Reaper, I return to the dungeon with the Samurai to see how I feel with a job I know better. While the numbers you see may be lower than what you’re used to, it really looks the same. Triggering the Midare Setsugekka attack after storing three Sen still takes up a noticeable portion of an enemy’s health bar, especially if you charge them up with Hissatsu: Kaiten.

I’m still waiting to see what kind of role-playing potential the Reaper will bring, but the prospect of finding optimal skill rotations is more enticing than ever. While much of what we’ve seen in the build is subject to change, and our time has been brief, I want to explore more of what Final Fantasy XIV‘s next expansion brings, even if that means leaving the old comforts behind. .
