Almost since CD Projekt Red is famous Cyberpunk 2077 to be in “satisfactory” condition, the business has become rather calm. Not much has been said since then, including when Cyberpunk 2077 missed its free DLC release window. Of course, behind the scenes there is probably another story. CD Projekt Red, by the rest of the year, has the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrades to be released, with a new Neflix-based DLC for the former and a list of free DLCs for the latter. Cyberpunk 2077The free downloadable content of will likely be an assortment of clothing, quests, weapons, vehicles, etc., all of which can be derived from what the Witcher 3 DLC obtained. However, while it’s easy to see the potential similarities between the two games, it’s hard to imagine Cyberpunk 2077premium DLC expansions from The Witcher 3.
The Witcher 3 DLC sets the gold standard
The Witcher 3 received two major expansions: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. These two DLCs are, to date, considered the best in the video game industry. Indeed, it’s not just with the base game that CD Projekt Red has practically become a household name, but the way the company has followed it. Hearts of Stone sees Geralt attempting to collect a debt for Gaunter O’Dimm, with the player drawn into a potential conflict between him and Olgierd von Everec. Players can save O’Dimm’s soul by betting that of Geralt.
In Blood and Wine, Geralt travels to Toussaint where he must investigate a series of murders and gets drawn into a powerful vampire storyline, with epic battles and political intrigue. Each DLC has unique approaches that set them apart, and while it may take around 10 hours to beat Hearts of Stone and 16 to beat Blood and Wine, each can feel like a game in its own right. A full part of the first takes around 18 hours, while the second takes over 40 hours. Indeed, the region introduced in Blood and Wine has more than 90 quests, new points of interest, new weapons, new monsters and a massive increase in the level cap.
By having a high level of quality in terms of storytelling and a virtually unprecedented amount of content in DLC, The Witcher 3 has truly established itself as the gold standard for DLC. Unfortunately, since the release of Blood and Wine in 2016, it seems that many games have ignored this call for a more solid set of premium content, instead sticking to a simple and proven formula for downloadable content. Now it looks like the call is on the same company, but Cyberpunk 2077 is more limited than The witcher.
Cyberpunk 2077 DLC has more limitations
For Geralt, these DLC fit perfectly into his worldview and role as the titular witcher. Blood and Wine plays on any end of The Witcher 3 well, and overall it serves as a level of character and world building that itself seemed impossible at the time. Cyberpunk 2077, on the other hand, is more limited in how it can react to the DLC no matter when and where the DLC occurs. Sometimes the DLC “arrives” before the game ends to avoid a lot of complications, but the problem here is that it wouldn’t make sense for V. As players know, the chip containing Johnny Silverhand’s psyche kills V, and the main quest is to figure out how to take down Arasaka, erase V’s name, and somehow survive somewhere.
As such, a pre-end DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 that doesn’t deal with V’s impending fate might not fit in so easily. After all, while acquiring rides and performing concerts helps V acquire the necessary funds, as well as build their legendary status ahead of the final showdown, a DLC probably wouldn’t have that same luxury.
If it actually dealt with V’s fate in some way, it couldn’t change the endings of Cyberpunk 2077. The DLC that would be set after the main game presents a similar conundrum. Not only does he have to handle various endings for V, but he also has to work out if a player lets V’s spirit go to Mikoshi, lets Johnny Silverhand take control of his body, and, at least in most endings, the time remaining. of V six months. .
While V may be more open to adventures during this time, having achieved some fame in Night City and having nothing to lose, there will always be the fact that V is on a timer. At the same time, if a post-ending DLC âârevolved around always trying to find the cure for V, that eliminates some endings and has the potential problem of being repetitive.
The Witcher 3 may still be the best way forward for Cyberpunk 2077
It remains to be seen if Cyberpunk 2077 can hit, match or maybe even overtake The Witcher 3‘s DLC, but there are elements of it Cyberpunk 2077 could use to better integrate its DLC. Supposing Cyberpunk 2077 gets two expansions, they could and should play out the same way. While both require a certain level to complete and are still possible before beating The Witcher 3, at least Blood and Wine goes better if it’s done after. As such, Cyberpunk 2077 needs its own level of ambiguity that could work in both a Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine style expansion.
For example, while V may be inherently reluctant to get caught up in his quest to save his life, Hearts of Stone didn’t give Geralt much of a choice. Much like a simple job gone wrong leads O’Dimm to train Geralt, V may find himself in a situation where he has no choice but to help as quickly as possible. Depending on when players complete this mission, Silverhand’s Pysche may or may not come into play.
Blood and Wine is sort of a good epilogue trip for Geralt, and his trip to a new country is perfect for V. Perhaps getting players to beat the main story beforehand. Cyberpunk 2077At least V’s second premium DLC could travel outside of Night City to accomplish a big mission. If the players let Silverhand take control, then it would just be Silverhand in V’s body. If V is on a timer, it can still be justified but better served outside of Night City. And, while not eliminating all potential endings, it comes down to what level of player agency is being ignored: the Mikoshi ending.
Anyway, for now, this is all just speculation. Cyberpunk 2077 has other hurdles to overcome before accessing its premium DLC, but it seems safe to say that The Witcher 3 will be hard to beat here.
