Vampire: The Masquerade – The Swan Song just dropped a new trailer for the upcoming narrative-RPG experience, and it makes us feel like The blackstyle detective shenanigans set in the Vampire: The Masquerade universe.
Vampire: The Masquerade – The Swan Song was officially unveiled in 2021, and will be set as a story-RPG, much like we saw from Until dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, just with cooler vampires in costume. The title is also heavily based on the iconic role-playing game of the same name and will feature character sheets, attributes and skills, which will evolve as you progress, which you will need to use to achieve your goals. swan song follows the events of a catastrophic event that struck members of the vampire community in Boston.
swan song will offer a whole sandbox of ways to complete objectives, where you can mix and match attributes and disciplines, making the way you approach each encounter unique. Skills will take you from simple acts like unlocking doors, to something more complex like convincing someone to let you through a restricted area. These attributes could harm or improve the way you approach each situation, and even a single point can unlock a completely different approach.
Disciplines, which are unique vampiric powers wielded by each of the three playable characters (Galeb, Emem, and Leysha), can also be used to navigate lanes differently. One character, Emem, can use a power called Solarity, reminiscent of Blink from Dishonored, to access otherwise inaccessible spaces, giving you insight or unique intelligence, as well as powers. Leysha can use an ability called Obfuscate, which starts out as a simple stealth mechanic, allowing her to go completely unnoticed, being able to actively hide objects in the environment, completely changing the dynamic. Each character, along with their skills and disciplines, will offer completely unique ways to approach each situation, making every interaction exciting and adaptive. Obviously, all this is not free, because you will have to manage your power attributes with higher power consumption. Skills can also only be used if your willpower has been strengthened, which means you will need to measure every action and consequence, clearly and carefully.
However, it’s not just you who influence each encounter, but the success or failure of each interaction will also impact your character’s traits. Every choice you make will have positive or negative consequences on your traits, which are like secondary goals, and a reward for “sticking to a particular playstyle”. These are, however, completely optional, so naturally I’ll probably ignore them altogether and just run my own show. NPCs will also have their own character sheets, and will have “crucial encounters”, some of which will even have their own vampiric attributes, which they will use against you. These confrontations will be dialogue-based fights and, depending on the outcome, will have “shifting” consequences for your character and reshape the narrative as a whole.
Meanwhile, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 changed development studios and was even almost canceled at one point. There’s still no clear indication of when we can expect the highly anticipated sequel.
Vampire: The Masquerade – The Swan Song has been delayed to May 19, 2022 after its scheduled release in February 2022 and is in development for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC.
