The best video games of March 2022

Thanks to Ring of Elden, February 2022 will go down as one of the best months for video games. But March 2022 wasn’t too bad either. From the latest entries in long-running series like Kirby, Gran Turismo, and Shadow Warrior to ambitious new ideas from smaller studios, there were plenty of awesome experiences across multiple genres for gamers this month.

If you were too busy playing the huge Ring of Elden, you may have missed some fantastic games. These are seven March 2022 titles players should check out once the Ring of Elden the hype dies down.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Kirby is back and more three-dimensional than ever. Although this flagship Nintendo series debuted in 1992, it had yet to offer an open 3D experience like Mario, Zelda, and many other classic franchises. Now, in celebration of the franchise’s t0th anniversary, Kirby and the Forgotten Land makes the leap to 3D in spectacular fashion. It features the excellent level design and various copy abilities expected from the series and also introduces the mechanic worthy of a “Mouthful Mode” where Kirby can suck in, but not entirely swallow, large objects.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land earned four stars from Digital Trends. “Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a delightful puzzle-platformer that adds more dimensions to the core Kirby formula,” game editor Giovanni Colantonio wrote in his review. “Mouthful Mode isn’t just a gimmick; it’s a hysterical mechanic that deepens the potential of the puzzle. The art direction is the star of the show, turning basic platforming patterns into a creative world that has always kept me curious to see what awaits me next level.

Whether you’re looking for a new game to play with your child, a wholesome title to cheer you up, or just a solid 3D platformer, Kirby and the Forgotten Land check all these boxes. This sets an exciting new precedent that future games in the series will potentially follow. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is available exclusively on Nintendo Switch.

Gran Turismo 7

Although this game has caused some controversy regarding its online orientation and microtransactions, there is no denying that Gran Turismo 7 is an incredibly polished racing game experience. Sony’s latest PS5 exclusive features many high-end cars rendered in stunning detail and allows gamers to fully embrace the simulation of upgrading, tuning and racing.

Gran Turismo 7 is a full-featured racing simulator with features that will appeal to fans of the series, those looking to learn more about the cars, and people who just want to race casually,” I wrote in a four-star review. “While this simulator is more about making the gamer feel stylish rather than exalted, it sticks to its vision and showcases the power of the PS5.”

While waiting for the next releases of the Forza Motorsport game, Gran Turismo 7 is the new benchmark in simulation racing thanks to its intricate design that tries to turn all its players into car enthusiasts. It’s just as engaging on PS4. Gran Turismo 7 is available on PS4 and PS5.

shadow warrior 3

shadow warrior 3 is a short and enjoyable first-person shooter that channels the high-octane energy of its predecessors and games like Eternal destiny. Although it is not very deep and can be beaten in just a few hours, shadow warrior 3 is a wacky, hard-to-put-down adventure about defeating a group of demons and a gigantic dragon.

“There’s hardly any decision-making, but lots of killing enemies, looking at pretty colors on the screen, and having uncomplicated fun,” DT writer Otto Kratky wrote in an article by Digital Trends on the game.”shadow warrior 3 is just a good game, but it does all the things a video game should do quickly and effortlessly.

This FPS game won’t bog players down in an expansive live service or present them with a top-notch narrative. Players looking for explosive shooting fun will find plenty to enjoy with Shadow Warrior 3. The game is available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One and is included in the PlayStation Now subscription service.

Dawn of the Monsters

Good Godzilla games are rare. Fortunately, Dawn of the Monsters lets players experience the massive power fantasy that makes Kaiju so exciting to so many people. Developer 13AM Games and publisher WayForward accomplishes this feat with a beat ’em up that’s easy to learn and fun to master. It also has a comic and manga-inspired art style that will likely impress Kaiju fans.

“Fans of kaiju, mecha, super robots, Super Sentai, Ultraman and beat ’em ups in general will find that Dawn of the Monsters don’t just stomp around for show,” writer DeAngelo Epps said of the game in a digital trends post. The game is available for Google Stadia, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. Those with a Stadia Pro subscription can currently download this game for free as part of that service.

Stranger from Heaven: Final Fantasy Origin

Jack Garland closes his fist in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

During most of its run, Stranger from Heaven: Final Fantasy Origin is one of the most absurd games of all time. This Final Fantasy prequel follows Jack Garland, the antagonist of this classic RPG, as he embarks on a quest to slay Chaos (and he can’t keep quiet about it). Despite how this intense game can get downright weird at times, Soulslike’s gameplay is quite fun and the story unfolds so well that any JRPG fan should play it.

That’s why I always highly recommended the game in my three and a half star review. “It’s the Venom: let there be carnage for Final Fantasy XVit’s Spider-Man: No Coming Home,” I wrote in this review. “He’s clumsy and clumsy compared to his much better peers, but he’s so serious in his delivery that you can’t help but adore him.”

Stranger from Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is much more than just launching Soulslike in the shadow of Ring of Elden. It’s an action game that’s as enjoyable as it is meme-worthy, and a title you’ll be thinking about long after you’ve beaten it. It is currently available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

The wonders of Tiny Tina

The player battles a flame-spewing mechanical dragon in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands.

“Borderlands but fantasy” is quite an intriguing pitch, and The wonders of Tiny Tina fully delivers on the promise of this premise. While still a loot-based FPS game, it builds on the formula established by Gearbox’s previous Borderlands games with new features like fully customizable characters, melee weapons, and magic spells. His comedic writing is always haphazard because it’s heavy on memes, but Gearbox made the drastic setting change go smoothly.

“’Attractive’ is the best way to describe Wonderland: He constantly laughs at himself and wants you to smile and laugh with him, and most of the time I did,” wrote writer Emily Morrow in Digital Trends’ 4-star review of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands . “Borderlands fans and tabletop game enthusiasts in particular will find a lot to like here.”

Those looking for a cooperative shooter to play with friends probably already had their eye on The wonders of Tiny Tina. Fortunately, the game lives up to expectations and should keep its players engaged for quite some time. The wonders of Tiny Tina is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Weird West

Do you like games that put a lot of emphasis on player choices, like Fallout: New Vegas of Dishonored? If that is the case, Weird West could be the game for you. This immersive simulation puts players in control of five different characters in a western frontier tinged with the supernatural. It really stands out by giving the player plenty of options to interact with every character, object, event, and decision they encounter on their journey.

“Of course, dark magic, weird cryptids, and an upgrade system are great on their own, but they’re just tools for playing in the open playing field that Wolfeye presents,” Andrew Zucosky wrote in preview last year. “Each conflict scenario in this game can be approached in multiple ways, and the real joy is finding one or two ways to have fun.”

Those compliments still hold up, even if there’s a bit of silliness around the edges. Character animations aren’t great upon close inspection, and combat controls seem better suited to a mouse and keyboard than a gamepad. Players who can overcome this will find a Western game with an otherworldly flair. who is super responsive to their actions and choices. It is currently available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The game is included in Xbox Game Pass, so those with a subscription should definitely consider checking it out.
