The best upcoming PS5 games including Grand Theft Auto 6 and Final Fantasy XVI

While the PS5 is undoubtedly a brilliant gaming machine, its first two years have been a little dry in terms of experiences that really show what it’s capable of.

The best ps5 games until now – Astro’s Playroom, Returnal and Ratchett & Clank aside – were also available on PS4, leaving the upgrade to struggle to justify itself.

Fortunately, that won’t be the case for long. Some excellent PS5 games will be released in the next few years. Here are the best of them, divided into PlayStation exclusives and those that will also grace consoles from Microsoft and/or Nintendo.

Best upcoming PS5 games: PlayStation exclusives

God of War: Ragnorak

God of War Ragnarok

/ Studio Santa Monica

One of the most anticipated PS5 games is actually the earliest to arrive. God of War: Ragnorak will arrive on November 9, featuring the same visceral combat we’ve come to expect from one of the best PlayStation franchises.

Kratos and his son Atreus will be back, battling all new monsters from Norse mythology. While the game is also coming to PS4, the sheer power of the PS5 will really bring out the larger-than-life action.

Release date: November 9, 2022.

/ Light productions

Early 2023 follows Forspoken, a Square Enix-exclusive PS5 console. It looks suitably gorgeous, taking full advantage of the power of the system, and should also tell the whole story, featuring the work of The Walking Dead and Star Wars: Rogue One screenwriter Gary Whitta.

This story focuses on Frey, a New Yorker transported to the mysterious and brutal open world of Athia, where she must stay alive and find a way back home.

Release date: January 24, 2023.

Final Fantasy XVI

Final Fantasy 16

/ Square-Enix

This is Final Fantasy 16, if Roman numerals aren’t your forte. Yes, the Final Fantasy series has been around for a while now, which should tell newcomers everything they need to know about the game’s addictive longevity.

Not much has been revealed about the plot or the setting, but early trailers suggest team-based gameplay might be a thing of the past in a world that looks a bit darker than what came before.

Release date: summer 2023.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Spiderman 2

/ insomniac games

More glorious action on the web, Marvel’s original Spider-Man was a breath of fresh superhero air when it arrived in 2018. It also pushed the PS4 pretty hard and, this being a PS5 exclusive, we can wait. even more of his sequel.

The story of Peter Parker and Miles Morales will continue, and it looks like the iconic villain Venom is set to feature as well. Developer Insomniac Games says we can expect new suits and abilities as well as a “compelling human story” when it arrives sometime in 2023.

Release date: 2023.

Marvel’s Wolverines

Marvel’s Wolverines

/ insomniac games

After Insomniac is done with Spider-Man, the studio gets its claws stuck in another Marvel franchise: Wolverine.

With no release date in sight, there are hardly any details, although the company said it aims to “respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular, but also try to give him a sense of freshness”.

Release date: to be determined.

Best upcoming PS5 games: cross-platform ports

Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy

/ avalanche software

To date, Harry Potter-related games don’t have the same big-budget feel as the movies, but that seems completely about to change with Hogwarts Legacy.

It’s an open-world RPG set in the Harry Potter universe, although we won’t see any of the characters from the books, given that it’s set an entire century before Harry and his friends were born. This should give the game the freedom to tell its own story, and early signs look very positive indeed.

Release date: February 10, 2023.

Skull and bones

Skull and bones

/ Ubisoft

Hacking – the old-school marine genre – isn’t as prolific in the game as it should be, but Skull and Bones looks set to change that. It’s an open-world adventure where you customize your pirate ship and assert your dominance over the seven seas.

If you fondly remember navigating Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, you should like it, as it was originally intended as a spin-off before becoming its own thing.

Release date: March 9, 2023.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

/ Solid as a rock

If you think the Batman Arkham games have been the pinnacle of console action for the past few years, then you’ll want to keep an eye out for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

It’s made by the same developer – Rocksteady – and will provide a co-op action experience for up to four players, each taking on the role of Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark. Given how fluid and natural the combat in the Arkham games felt, this should be awesome.

Release date: spring 2023.

Street Fighter 6

Street Fighter 6

/ Capcom

Street Fighter needs no introduction, and the sixth promises the same addictive brawling action the series is known for, with familiar faces joined by new ones.

It looks like Capcom has been thinking about how the single-player experience could be improved and has introduced a semi-open world adventure mode which could be a brilliant innovation or something that is quickly forgotten. We’ll find out at some point next year.

Release date: 2023.

Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2

/ Remedy

It’s been a decade since we’ve had a new Alan Wake game – the spinoff title of American Nightmare – and we’re finally getting a full sequel at some point in 2023.

This time it won’t be an Xbox exclusive after PlayStation gamers get a taste of horror action with the remastered versions. We’ve been told this release will venture more in a survival horror direction, and we can’t wait to jump out of our skins again.

Release date: 2023.

star wars eclipse

star wars eclipse

/ quantum dream

Quantum Dream is known for its style of adventure to choose from like Heavy Rain, Fahrenheit, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human. Now the studio has secured a Star Wars license, and we can’t wait to see what it does with it.

It’s very early, and all we know is that it’s set during the High Republic – the period between 300 and 50 years before the Skywalker saga.

Release date: to be determined.

Grand Automatic Flight 6

Grand Automatic Flight 6

/ rock star games

It’s fair to say that Grand Automatic Flight 6 is the most anticipated PS5 game. We’ve certainly waited long enough, with the latest installment a swansong title for the PS3, but with no release date in sight, it looks like we’ve still got a ways to go.

Back in September the first images of the game have been leaked onlinesuggesting a return to Miami-style Vice City and the first playable female character in the GTA universe.

Release date: to be determined.

Best upcoming PS5 games: remakes and remasters

Dead Space Remake

/ mobile studio

If you prefer something a little more familiar, then Sony has you covered. As with the last generation, a number of games are already due to be redone or remastered for PS5.

Three of them — Resident Evil 4, Dead Space, and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth — are slated for release in 2023. Two other big ones — Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Silent Hill 2 — don’t have release dates yet, but are also worth watching.
