Guardians of the Galaxy is part of the March PC Game Pass arrivals

At least five new games are coming to PC Game Pass in March, with more to be confirmed later in the month. The highlight is Guardians of the Galaxy, if only because it’s only five months old and still sells for $60 on Steam. It will join the service on March 10 and is apparently worth a look: our reviewer described it as “a surprisingly good time“which is a good appreciation when it comes to licensed superhero games.

Also in the barrel is Far: Changing the Tides, a contemplative post-apocalypse game about navigating a sci-fi ship through miserable lands. Launched today, it is the sequel to Far: Lone Sailsthat Andy dug in 2018.

Elsewhere, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 arrives on March 3, Kentucky Route Zero on March 10, and Young Souls – a beat ’em up 2D RPG – on the same day. If you’re using the Xbox cloud gaming service, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Kentucky Route Zero, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Young Souls will also be available there.

As always, a handful of titles will leave the subscription service in March, so if you haven’t taken the chance to play Nier: Automata, Phogs!, Torchlight 3, and The Surge 2, it might be time to start them before they disappear on March 15. Borderlands’ explosive and incredibly self-aware franchise doesn’t deal with intricacies, and neither does the upcoming spin-off game The wonders of Tiny Tina. Bringing the series’ high-octane action and near-endless arsenal of weaponry to the realm of a high-fantasy setting inspired by tabletop role-playing games, the spin-off aims to introduce a new take on the popular “looter-shooter” series.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a free sequel to Borderlands 2’s most popular expansion, Dragon Dungeon Assault, which blended hyper-violent cartoon shooter carnage with a mindful Dungeons & Dragons-style campaign. It features new heroes, weapons, and an all-new campaign with the titular character serving as guide and dungeon master for the party of heroes.

This spin-off is coming to PC via the Epic Games Store, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on March 25.

I was able to play about an hour of gameplay, test out two unique character classes, and the spin-off stays true to the fundamentals of Borderlands action and quirky sense of humor.

As an admirer of the Borderlands series, I found its most recent entry, Borderlands 3, to offer a stellar mix of solid shooter gameplay and a compelling RPG progression system. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands builds on the foundations of the previous game but puts a different spin on the action and setting, bringing its loud and incredibly high-energy storyline to the fore.

Swapping out space sci-fi for a high-fantasy setting that still has working weapons, the spin-off presents its take on a familiar RPG backdrop. You’re right in a fantasy RPG campaign, with references to fantasy fiction, and the plot also pokes fun at the absurdities that occur when a tabletop RPG campaign regularly spirals out of control.

You’ll face enemies that reference classic monsters and characters from other fantasy fiction in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.

Much like previous games, the style of humor can sometimes feel random in Wonderlands. Unlike the others, however, this spinoff’s plot and jokes feel a bit more focused as it engages in its RPG pastiche. Some of my favorite moments came from helping overworked goblins working in a mine to rebel against their captors and form some sort of union. And all this while using firearms and magic to vaporize any enemy in your path.

With this spin-off, it’s clear that the developers at Gearbox are doubling down on what made the Borderlands series such a hit with gamers – its emphasis on fast-paced, fluid shooter gameplay that incorporates some seriously over-the-top skills from your chosen characters. .

In keeping with the concept of playing a Borderlands version of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands allows players to develop their character appearance and class type. While the final game will feature 6 character classes, the demo I played focused on the Graveborn and Stabbomancer classes – the Borderlands version of the Necromancer and Rogue archetypes, respectively.

The infamous “Butt Stallion”, a recurring Borderlands 2 joke, makes a comeback in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.

Another twist Wonderlands introduces to the familiar loop of shooting enemies and watching the loot flow is mixing different class types. Playing as Graveborn, I was able to call upon the abilities of the aptly named Brr-Zerker class, which mixes ice magic with ferocious melee strikes. The Graveborn and Brr-Zerker were definitely an odd couple of classes, but it made for some really wacky attack combos that tore through groups of goblins during my dungeon runs, resulting in some really enjoyable battles.

One change we didn’t see much of in the preview build was the overworld. This gameplay element allows you to move around a world map with a cartoon version of your character to venture into new dungeons, take on side quests, and see dynamic activities. Sadly, this wasn’t present in the demo, but the single major location set in a snowy mountain promised a bunch of hidden side events.

Ever since it was announced, I had a lingering concern about Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. Although presented as a standalone game, it gave me the impression that it would stay very close to what was done on Borderlands 3, making it a bit like another expansion. However, its sense of humor and new setting give it a noticeably different flavor to previous games, which I leaned into during my session.

This spin-off is unlikely to win over players who aren’t already into the Borderlands series. For fans though, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands packs in something quite different from the main series – it’s all built around the premise of a raging tabletop RPG campaign mixed with the smooth gameplay of a Borderlands game. And that’s pretty compelling to me.

In the future, if some of the most popular sci-fi games are to be believed, we’ll all be drinking at a bar called Afterlife.

Cyberpunk 2077an open-world shooter set in 2077 but released in 2020 (finally technically), is back in the air thanks to a recent next-generation respray. Integral to its plot is a dusty basement called Afterlife. A watering hole of the same name is an equally vital location in BioWare’s 2183-set space opera, Mass Effect 2which itself has experienced a recent revival thanks to the Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Obviously, the comparisons are not lacking.

District

In cyberpunk, you’ll find Afterlife in the southern strip of the Watson neighborhood of Night City. He hides at the bottom of a stairwell under a building next to a parking lot. Mass Effect‘s Afterlife, meanwhile, is set in the central atrium of Omega, an anarchic jellyfish-shaped interstellar station carved out of the remains of a shattered asteroid.

Atmosphere

Omega’s afterlife is the kind of airy, open space most often frequented by cocaine-starved finance brothers. Patterns of faded flames dance on the walls. A velvet rope blocks the door, as does a massive bodyguard. Inside, you’ll find a semi-circular bar — great for catching a bartender’s attention, but not exactly for hanging out — flanked by several dance floors and a haughty VIP section.

Night City’s afterlife is spacious without being sparse.

Head beyond Night City, however, and you’ll find something much more down to earth (literally). Customers line up at the bar or in smoky booths to drink cheap beer and drink well. Dim lighting and lower ceilings give it a palpable sense of intimacy. In the back, you’ll find an alcohol-stained pool table. If anyone is looking for a hit here, they don’t care much.

The music

To hang out at Omega’s Afterlife is to submit to the futuristic, ill-advised soundtrack of a mid-’90s Bottega Veneta fashion show. At Night City, you get crunchy guitars, heartbeats and belted lyrics – a delicious mixtape that would, for the time, be the equivalent of your neighborhood bar putting on a 1920s playlist. The Ravenloft campaign setting would also be a good place to use such a location. Ravenloft has standalone “Domains of Dread”, each with their own horror theme and ruled by a powerful Dark Lord. It is not easy to leave an area of dread, as many of them are protected by barriers that prevent people from escaping. Usually the only way to leave a Dread Realm is to defeat the Dark Lord (which is no easy task) or find hidden means of escape.
