Since their beginnings in Pokémon Gold & Silver, The Shining Pokémon have been fan favorite additions to any game they appear in. Previously, Shiny Pokémon were largely absent from the game. Mystery Dungeon side series, with the exception of some NPCs and one Wii-Ware game only in Japan. However, that all changed with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, which allows players to recruit certain Shiny creatures.
Before we start, it’s crucial to note that only certain Pokémon can appear Shiny in the game. Theses are Butterfree, Ninetales, Rapidash, Electrode, Exeggcute, Exeggutor, Starmie, Magikarp, Gyarados, Idem, Dragonite, Hoothoot, Noctowl, Ampharos , Azumarill, Sudowoodo, Aipom, Espeon, Wobbufett, Shuckle, Corsola, Celebi, Spinda, Altaria Zangoose, Metagross, Ambipom and Lickilicky.
When selecting a dungeon, a yellow symbol will appear next to the name of the dungeon if a strong enemy can appear in it. Highlighting the dungeon will reveal which Pokemon it is. Only strong enemies can appear shiny, so start by simply selecting the Shiny Pokemon you want to hunt. Next, make sure you have a strong Pokémon team dedicated to recruiting. Ideally, this means Pokémon with the friendly and rare qualities in a squad, plus a lead equipped with a friend bow. To maximize your chances, make sure your head holding the friendly bow also knows the false move, as defeating a Pokémon with move increases the chances of it joining the team.
Before you go, collect a few orbs, especially the Inviting Orb to further increase recruitment rates and the Rare Quality Orb, which does the same for Pokémon of Rare Quality. With all of these effects stacked up, your recruiting rate is as high as it gets.
As soon as you enter the dungeon, start eliminating any Pokémon you come across. The first objective is to fill the team of eight members, the maximum for a dungeon. This will maximize the effect of Squad Up, which increases the recruit rate with the number of team members you currently have. With that done, you will need a little luck. Strong enemies aren’t incredibly rare, but they don’t always spawn and only spawn from specific floors which vary by dungeon.
The best strategy is to spend as much time as possible on a given floor until you have to move on. Eventually, a strong enemy is likely to appear. While the exact spawn rates for Shiny are unknown, they are much lower than in the main games. Shiny Pokémon will appear quite rarely, and as soon as they do, it’s time to fight. First, make sure the rest of your team is set up not to use moves, because if a teammate delivers the final blow, the Pokémon cannot be recruited.
After locating the Shiny and making sure your teammates can’t attack it, use your Inviting Orb and Rare Quality Orb. If possible, stand at the end of a hallway to make sure there is absolutely no chance that other teammates can do damage. Defeat the Shiny (although be aware that this can be a difficult task depending on the progress of the game in the chosen dungeon) preferably with False Swipe and I hope you get lucky. Otherwise, stay on the same floor as long as possible before you have to continue and repeat this method on the next floor. It may take multiple battles – or even multiple dungeon runs – but it will eventually deliver the results you’re looking for.
The outlier here is Celebi. It is the only Pokemon that is not a strong enemy, and also the only Legendary or Mythical Pokemon that can appear brilliant in the game. Celebi achieves this status as a reference to the Shiny Celebi that appears prominently in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky. To recruit a Shiny Celebi, players must first conquer the utterly intimidating Purity Forest – a dungeon that requires a single Pokémon to enter level 5 and clear 99 floors.
Purity Forest is the ultimate game challenge and requires some luck to complete it. Ultimately, Celebi waits until the end of the dungeon and will automatically join the rescue team. With Celebi recruited, you will have access to his rescue camp, Healing Forest. After reaching this milestone, Shiny Celebi can rarely appear in mysterious dungeon houses. These prerequisites make her the most difficult Shiny to obtain in the game.
There are a total of 27 Shiny Pokémon available in DX Rescue Team. Recruiting them all will surely require a lot of luck, but with the methods outlined here, you should have everything you need to begin your search for these elusive creatures.
