sea of thieves continues to add new content every few months in the form of seasons. The last one started in early December 2021 and will end in March 2022. Season 5, like previous seasons, introduces new gameplay elements and cosmetic items along with a long list of bug fixes and quality improvements of life.
Season 5 is largely Christmas themed, and there are plenty of features that help bring some festive cheer to the game. The new season is well underway, so not all pirates looking to get started have time to waste.
9 Fireworks and flares allow players to light up the sky
One of the big gameplay additions for Season 5 is the new fireworks and flares. These items can be purchased in crates from merchants in the Merchant Alliance or found in barrels across the Sea of Thieves. They can be loaded into cannons and when fired produce beautiful displays in over 50 different designs. Flares work the same way, though they hang in the air instead of exploding. Fireworks cannot be used to directly damage enemy ships, but they are capable of starting fires if landed correctly.
8 Create custom treasure maps leading to buried treasure
This pirate trope was one of the few missing from sea of thieves, and its addition is more than welcome. Players can now bury treasure in sand or ground and will receive a card with a classic red X returning them to their stash. These cards are then stored on the captain’s table in a card pack and can be gifted or stolen by other crews. Players can also post their cards to a quest board for other players to use, which will net the owner of the card a good chunk of fame. Like most things in sea of thieves, however, the treasure that a crew buries will no longer be accessible to them in future sessions.
seven Relax by sitting and dozing
A new world interaction has been added to the game in the form of seats and beds. When going to certain locations on ships, outposts, or islands, the player will be prompted to sit or sleep.
It’s a great addition for anyone who really enjoys role-playing as a pirate, and the third-person camera option provides the opportunity for some great screenshots. Sleeping even provides a mechanical advantage, as a sleeping pirate will slowly regenerate health.
6 Fun new songs and emotes let pirates play
Pirates looking to express themselves get a host of new options both emotional and musical in Season 5. The songbook grows with the additions of “Ballad of the Mer”, “Infernal Galop” and the always classic “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” New emotes with polyhedral dice allow hackers to randomly assign tasks or play games within games. The Sand Angel emote allows a pirate to lay on the ground and also create beautiful art.
5 There are a lot of quality of life updates
Any game as big as sea of thieves is going to require tweaks along the way to balance gameplay or fix bugs. Season 5 helps make the experience smoother with a handful of changes. Skeletons and Ghosts now have a chance to drop ammo bags when killed, which can reload all weapons. Seagulls will now circle around the remains of a Kraken or Megalodon, helping players find the loot these creatures drop. There are several other tweaks and small additions that generally improve gameplay.
4 Holiday-themed rewards are available throughout the season
Since the beginning of season 5 at the beginning of December, a large part is devoted to Christmas or winter. As they gain renown, all players will receive costumes and items from the Bell Brigade set, a family of mostly red, green, and gold fancy cosmetics. Items such as the Mistletoe Fishing Rod, Cozy Scarf Jacket, and Snowy Ship Lantern help players decorate with joy.
Pirates who have purchased the Plunder Pass will also gain access to the Boreal Aurora items, a set of ship cosmetics featuring a purple and blue color scheme with reindeer iconography. These holiday items are available throughout the season, so pirates can start collecting them to wear next year.
3 The Mermaid Caves are still there
The pirate crews who were unable to fully explore the treasures and sanctuaries of the mermaids of sea of thieves Season 4 need not worry, as this content is still very present in the game. This continues the trend of sea of thieves spotlighting new content through its season structure, but not making that content exclusive to the season. It’s a great way to give players a limited amount to focus on each season while simultaneously building up the game world and making it much richer.
2 Hackers can spend their money on new Emporium items
Each season brings a slew of new items for pirates to purchase with their hard-earned loot. One of the biggest sets this season is the Royal Revenge ship set, a gorgeous red and gold collection that prepares a crew to sail the seas in style. For pirates themselves, Frozen Horizon gear and instruments add to the Frozen Horizon ship set introduced last winter. The game also continues its connection to the brand with Pirates of the Caribbean with the costume of Captain Barbossa.
1 Pirates can plan their adventures around new events and actions
Several events have already passed in Season 5, but there will be more on the way. The season kicked off with the Festival of Giving followed by the New Year themed Grogmanay. In addition to these multi-day events, sea of thieves introduces regular events that will be announced a week in advance. These events vary widely in content, from increased runs for selling treasure to bonus fame rewards. Details are constantly changing, so hackers looking to plan ahead should check out the Event Hub on the sea of thieves website.
