Known for defending the city of Detroit, RoboCop is finally back to defend the world of video games. RoboCop: Rogue Town puts players behind the gun and visor of the man once known as Alex Murphy, and it takes the action to a suitably dark place. Continuing the story of the old movies, the game promises to be the spiritual successor the original film never had.
Hoping to capture the feeling of the classic series like never before, rogue town is definitely the cyberpunk game that audiences have been waiting for. While that’s still a bit of a stretch, what’s been shown so far will require players to wait less than 20 seconds to comply – and buy. Here’s what we know so far about the dystopian first-person shooter.
RoboCop: The Rogue City Trailer
RoboCop: Rogue TownThe first trailer for was shown at Nacon Direct, about a year after the game was originally announced. It follows a trend of action games based on 80s action movies developed by Teyon, as the company was also the origin of the two Terminator: Resistance and Rambo: the video game, the first of which was very well received. The first look at the game is what fans expected and then some. Showcasing the franchise’s gritty, futuristic crime-beleaguered Detroit, and the game’s visuals capture the cyberpunk aesthetic perhaps even better than Cyberpunk 2077. Crooks run rampant in the streets, with hostage takings and homicides being the rule of the day. Luckily for ordinary Detroit citizens, law enforcement has received an upgrade.
The midsection of the trailer brings RoboCop himself into the fray, armed with his trusty Auto-9 pistol. His voice is provided by none other than Peter Weller, who portrayed the character in the original Robotcop movies. Basic gunplay is also shown, with RoboCop using his high-tech tracking system to shoot enemies in the distance. Enemies include ED-209, the chief villain of the second RoboCop film. So far, it’s assumed that the game will be a single-player experience, with everything else regarding the gameplay up for debate.
What is RoboCop: Rogue City?
This isn’t the only continuity with the movies, as the game takes place after the events of RoboCop 3. Not much has been said about the plot, but it seems to involve RoboCop going rogue and turning on the public. This is reinforced by a line of dialogue said in the trailer, though it may have been directed at the villainous ED-209.
The official synopsis reads:Welcome to Detroit; crime rages as the city teeters on the brink of ruin, people fight for crumbs while others live extravagant lives of luxury. Control of the Detroit Police Department is turned over to the Omni Consumer Products Corporation in an effort to restore order. You are that solution, RoboCop, a cyborg tasked with protecting the city.“
When will RoboCop: Rogue City be released?
RoboCop: Rogue Town will not be released until June 2023 and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Windows and even Nintendo Switch. The fact that the Nintendo console can handle the rather graphics-intensive game speaks volumes, though the gameplay revealed so far may just be a preliminary mock-up, with the end result not quite as advanced. Players will find out for themselves when RoboCop: Rogue Town fall next summer.
