Paizo CEO and co-owner Lisa Stevens announces retirement

Paizo co-founder and CEO Lisa Stevens has officially retired from the gaming industry, ending a 35-year career in the gaming industry. Stevens officially announced her retirement yesterday after a period of two-year transition during which she gradually moved away from the day-to-day operations of the Scout and star seeker editor. “After 35 years of creating some of the most incredible games and working with the most incredible people, it’s time for me to step aside and move on to the next chapter of my life,” Stevens wrote in his retirement letter. . Stevens noted that she was diagnosed with a debilitating but non-fatal illness that made it harder to perform her job in January 2020. The ensuing pandemic, coupled with her diagnosis, allowed her to take a step back from to the day-to-day running of the business to the point that she felt comfortable with retirement.

Stevens has worked in the tabletop industry since 1987 and was Wizards of the Coast’s first full-time employee. Stevens was involved in many facets of Wizards of the Coast during her 10 years with the company before leaving to found Paizo in 2002. Paizo first worked with Wizards of the Coast, publishing magazines such as Dragon and dungeon, before competing with Wizards of the Coast when Paizo launched Scout as a campaign setting and then as a rival game for Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition. For several years, Scout outmoded Dungeons & Dragons in sales and the game remains a popular fantasy role-playing game over a decade after its release.

In her retirement post, Stevens noted that she and partner Vic Wertz are still co-owners of Paizo, so she won’t be retired from the business entirely. However, Stevens has handed over all operations to Paizo’s current management team, which is led by Paizo President Jim Butler.
