Studio Trigger and Netflix have published (opens in a new tab) the intro sequence for the upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, based on Cyberpunk 2077 (opens in a new tab)by Night City and co-produced by the CD Projekt Red team. The intro is pretty well composed, with a delightful visual style that includes the strong yellow/magenta/blue color scheme used in Cyberpunk 2077’s marketing and logo palette.
This lines up with what we previously wrote about the chaos of last month’s trailer for Edgerunners, which we think “looks really good.” (opens in a new tab)
For my part, I am very happy that the creator Mike Pondsmith (opens in a new tab) gets the top spot for creating the world since the 90s.
The intro song might surprise some: it’s Franz Ferdinand’s hit “This Fire”, which I think I last heard around 2008 and was honestly shocked to hear on an intro of anime. (No joke: I went to find the other browser tab the song was supposed to play in.)
Here’s the official description, per Netflix: “The series tells a 10-episode standalone story about a street kid trying to survive Night City – a city of the future obsessed with technology and body modification. With everything to lose, he stay alive by becoming an edgerunner – a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.
The anime is made by Studio Trigger, a hugely popular animation group whose hit works include Kill la Kill and Darling in the Franxx, as well as Netflix’s BNA and Little Witch Academia. In the gaming world, Studio Trigger has worked on animation in games like Indivisible (opens in a new tab)Fire Elmblem Fates and Shantae and the Seven Sirens intro video.
