Based on feedback collected during Shadowlands, Blizzard is introducing changes to World of Warcraft: Dragonflight Mythic Dungeons.
World of Warcraft: Dragonflight is the next expansion pack for Blizzard’s massively multiplayer online experience that took the world by storm 17 years ago. After the cosmic scale of Shadowland, Dragonflight represents a return to the old and the familiar – not only in terms of frame, but also in terms of design philosophy. One can’t help but wonder what this means for the new systems that have come to define the World of Warcraft like Mythic Keystone dungeons.
As the third expansion to feature Mythic Keystone dungeons, Shadowland shed light on the limitations of the system, as well as ways to push those limitations, and expand the system significantly while maintaining the format that has captured the hearts of so many World of Warcraft players. reintroduce Legion Mythic Keystone dungeons in Shadowland was just the first step on this journey, and Blizzard Entertainment seems ready to take the next logical step.
World of Warcraft: Dragonflight will launch with four upgrade areas and eight dungeons from the start. However, unlike its predecessor, Dragonflight will feature a mixed selection for its Keystone seasons. The first season will feature half of dragon flight dungeons and four other dungeons reworked from older expansions – with the second half of dragon flight dungeons arriving with the second Keystone season at a later date.
On paper, this opens up many new possibilities and serves to extend the longevity of the Mythic Dungeon scene at the expansion level. While Shadowland Season 4 decided to shake things up by offering players eight dungeons from the last four expansions of World of WarcraftJudgeHype’s interview with Ion Hazzikostas seems to imply that Dragonflight not only will this system continue – but that it will largely be the baseline in the future.
Although it’s too early to tell the exact selection of returning dungeons for Dragonflightit is reasonable to hope that gamers will see the return of old classics such as Mists of Pandaria Scholomance or Cataclysm Zul’Aman redone as Mythic Keystone dungeons.
With the return of talent trees and a lack of borrowed player power that has plagued the design of recent World of Warcraft expansions, Blizzard’s message to the player base is crystal clear: Dragonflight wants to bridge the disparity between old and new, taking the best of both worlds. The jury decides on the success of this approach.
