An actual hexapod robot with full controller support and a working claw drew comparisons with Cyberpunk 2077’s Flathead Monitoring Unit.
A Cyberpunk 2077 fan shared a real-life take on the game’s Flathead surveillance robot, controlled using an Xbox Series X / S controller. The bug-shaped hexapod looks a lot like the game’s “Flathead” Militech MT0D12 unit, a Militech bot used for reconnaissance missions. In robotics, hexapods are robots that walk on six legs, often making comparisons to insects.
Cyberpunk 2077 is an infamous first-person action RPG game set in a dystopian future. Cyberpunk 2077 is controversial due to its bugs, launched with countless performance issues and issues, many of which are groundbreaking. Gamers have found that the PC versions of the game are the most reliable, while the base Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles tend to suffer the most. The PS4 issues caused the game to be temporarily withdrawn from digital sale through the PlayStation Store due to Sony concerns about its condition. While the game is now considered much more playable, Sony has advised gamers not to play on base PS4 consoles, suggesting the PS4 Pro or PS5 model for the best experience. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan explained the reasoning behind the decision, saying PlayStation Store has withdrawn Cyberpunk 2077 “for the community.“
Reddit user HellhoundGuy recently discovered a real-world hexapod with a striking resemblance to Cyberpunk‘s Flathead. The robot comes from the creator Winger94, who detailed the manufacturing process of the 3D printed micro-servo bot (named “ZeroBug”) on their Youtube channel. HellhoundGuy posted the find to the r / cyberpunkgame subreddit, where players praised Wingman94 for their incredible build. On their Hackaday page, the technician explains that ZeroBug is powered by Raspberry Pi Zero and an STM32F103, with features including a custom locomotion engine, a web interface with keyboard and mouse input, as well as full controller support via Bluetooth. ZeroBug is even able to pick up and manipulate objects with its claw, as seen in the video below. For those interested in robotics but concerned about the price, Wingman94 stated that creating ZeroBug costs only “150-200 € for the whole robot“, which works out to about $ 177 to $ 237.
CD Projekt Red’s focus on technology and cybernetics in its latest title means there are a lot of robots in Cyberpunk 2077. However, it doesn’t appear that this creation is specifically based on Flathead himself. Wingman94 states that the design is actually inspired by a hexapod created by Matt Denton, named MSR-uBug. While it seems like ZeroBug is a passionate project rather than a tribute to Flathead, the two are alike. Cyberpunk 2077‘s Flathead is capable of scaling walls, which could be beyond the power of ZeroBug, although its leg mechanics are impressive to say the least. Wingman94 explains: “To make the robot work, the STM32 manages the locomotion of the legs, the reverse kinematics and controls its 18 servos. All of these calculations are performed at 50 Hz, allowing the Hexapod to move smoothly and with great precision. Its compact frame is fully 3D printed.“Thanks to ZeroBug’s claw, it looks like it would make a very useful partner in combat, albeit a bit slow.
Cyberpunk 2077 has seen many fixes and improvements since its launch in 2020, but still suffers from glitches, performance issues, and some instability. CD Projekt Red has judged Cyberpunkstability “satisfactory,“but continues to work on bugs and overall performance. The game, which was first announced in 2012, was delayed a few times in the months leading up to launch, but still released with many flaws. developer is releasing new generation versions of the game later this year, which will hopefully be much more stable.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PS4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC, and it will launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X / S in 2021.
