It might not be as stylish as some of the other entries on this list, but it’s impossible to say that Castle Crashers is not fun. Fighting and brawling in a fantasy cartoon kingdom will certainly keep players entertained for hours on end, but don’t let the Newgrounds seem deceptive, there is strategy involved as well.
Players can upgrade their knights, choose different weapons, award skill points, and take different paths throughout this exaggerated adventure. And with so many items to unlock, there’s reason to come back for more.
8 Borderlands Series
Borderlands has been called a hybrid of FPS and Diablo, and that’s basically not too far from the truth. Battling hordes of mutants and bandits across a cell-shaded wasteland has never been more fun, especially when this game has more loot than a horde of dragons.
With multiple classes, tons of weapons, and four entries in this cult series, there are plenty of ways to get into the fray. Good luck, Vault-Hunters.
7 Torch series
This top-down RPG could have a Devil-inspired makeup, but Torchlight has a fancy flavor all its own. Its history, world, and characters alone are worth giving the game one more time to give, but as is the case with most dungeon crawlers, this one is definitely better with a party. complete.
There are plenty of monsters to crush, character classes to experience, companions to help, and a world to explore and conquer. One player is good, but nothing beats a full party.
6 The Lord of the Rings: War in the North
An underrated hack-and-slash title, but one that will scratch every itch imaginable. An epic journey against the backdrop of Tolkien’s War of the Ring with a community of three quirky characters? How has it not been reissued yet?
The split screen may take a bit of getting used to, but it’s an epic friend quest once everyone is locked up. Action is the biggest selling point, and crushing orcs together never gets old.
5 Gauntlet Series
If there’s one co-op RPG the whole genre owes its life to, it’s Glove. This is the OG of dungeon crawlers and every entry from the arcade original to the modern remake is worth playing with a full party of adventurers.
Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie, and Elf join forces against an army of goblins, skeletons, and more in their quest to attack dungeons, collect loot, and make it to the exit. A bit of a rinse and repeat, but not a formula without its own distinct charms.
4 Battle Axe
Perhaps the last entry on the list, but not the one that was taken lightly. Battle Axe that’s what happens when Gauntlet, Golden Ax, and Zombies ate my neighbors put in a blender. When an evil witch casts a curse on the kingdom, three heroes must join forces to prevent the world from falling under her dark hand.
It’s an arcade adventure at its best, but certainly not without its flaws. Single player can be as difficult as a quarter-eating arcade cabinet, so having multiple players literally provides a better experience.
3 Stardew Valley
Not all RPGs have to be aimed at fighting evil, casting spells, or attacking chests for guns. Sometimes it’s just nice to relax and plant a garden together. Enter Stardew Valley for gamers who just want to relax and let off steam.
16-bit paradise Stardew Valley offers more than sharecropping to pass the time. In fact, players can mine for ore, explore dungeons, raise cattle, and even just take a simple fishing trip. Why not redeem codes and come for a business?
2 Dragon crown
This has been said over and over again, but the reputation still stands. Dragon crown is one of the most beautiful RPGs ever made, mainly thanks to the artistic conception of Vanillaware. It ticks a lot of boxes for traditional action RPGs, but it’s a classic experience any fan of the genre should have.
It’s practically a love letter to the genre and with a full roster of adventurers to choose from, each offering their own unique way to play, it delivers a lot more than the standard fantasy beat-em-up.
1 Diablo III
While the second entry in Blizzard’s popular dungeon crawler series is considered the best, Diablo III arguably brings as much content and carnage to the table as its older brother. In addition, it is the one that is currently available on a multitude of consoles.
The players have the choice between heroes, armor, constructions, weapons and of course this very important part of the loot. Looting dungeons and killing demons will always be a must-do activity for RPG fans, and Diablo makes this multiplayer hobby an absolute dream.
